THE FADE OUT #1-4
Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips, the team behind Criminal, Incognito and Fatale, return with The Fade Out, a 1940s set Hollywood murder mystery. Much like classic TV show Twin Peaks, the murder feels more like a launching pad into a whole host of other stories and mysteries featuring the interesting cast of characters that inhabit the world that Brubaker and Phillips have (re)created.
Being a big fan of their previous collaborations picking up the book was a no-brainer, as the quality of both the story and art is as high as normal – these guys are on a decade-long winning streak together and it looks set to continue.
Following screenwriters, actors, directors, upcoming starlets and studio bosses, there is already a lot going on in these issues and I was reminded of several favourite films of mine such as Sunset Boulevard, LA Confidential and Mulholland Drive.
I have high hopes for the rest of this series and if, like me, a noir mystery set in the dying days of Hollywood’s Golden Age appeals, then this series delivers and looks set to continue doing so.
